For any morphism of schemes one can define a cotangent complex in nonpositive degree whose zeroeth cohomology is the cotangent sheaf; the right exact sequence of cotangent sheaves becomes a distinguished triangle of cotangent complexes. In this talk we sketch the definition of the cotangent complex, describe its properties and use in deformation theory and view it as part of the "hidden smoothness" philosophy.
