Abstract:
Many-body quantum mechanics describes a wide variety of physical systems. Obtaining predictions from the Schrödinger equations, however, is very difficult due to the huge number of degrees of freedom. In certain mean-field regimes this problem can be overcome by deriving effective equations with fewer degrees of freedom. In this talk, I introduce the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation and discuss its rigorous derivation in some detail. If time permits, I then discuss more recent results and refinements, like mixed states and the Vlasov equation.
