Solutions to one-dimensional hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with small BV initial data are now well understood. However, for initial data with large total variation, many fundamental issues remain open.   The talk will focus on the 2 x 2 system of isentropic gas dynamics, and discuss three open questions:  the possible blow up of the total variation, the emergence of vacuum in finite time, and the  generic regularity of solutions.
