Mechanics of Polymer Gels

Course Type:
PhD Course
Academic Year:
2014-2015
Period:
April - May
Duration:
20 h
Description:

This course deals with the basic physics and models of polymer gels, focusing on swelling phenomena. First, we will establish a non-linear continuum model that couples solvent diffusion and polymer network elasticity, able to describe large deformations in polymer gels. Then, several solutions of the model will be discussed, including examples of swelling-induced instabilities. In the final part of the course, we will present the numerical implementation of the model. Hands-on projects will be developed by the students as a final assignment. Prior knowledge of the fundamentals of non-linear continuum mechanics and the finite element method is required.
