Topics on the mathematical modeling of physical and biological systems

Course Type:
PhD Course
Academic Year:
2021-2022
Period:
December-March
Duration:
48 h
Description:

Review of the mechanics of Newtonian fluids (kinematics, balance laws, constitutive equations, Reynolds number, Navier-Stokes and Stokes systems). Fundamental solutions of the Stokes system. Swimming at low Reynolds numbers as a control problem for the Stokes system. Control principles for swimming micro-robots. Optimal design and optimal control principles. Trajectories of unicellular swimmers exploiting periodic beating of cilia and flagella. Selected case studies from the recent literature inspired by swimming unicellular organisms and bio-inspired swimming micro-robots.
