Mechanics of Polymer Gels

This course deals with the basic physics and models of polymer gels, focusing on swelling phenomena. First, we will establish a non-linear continuum model that couples solvent diffusion and polymer network elasticity, able to describe large deformations in polymer gels. Then, several solutions of the model will be discussed, including examples of swelling-induced instabilities. In the final part of the course, we will present the numerical implementation of the model. Hands-on projects will be developed by the students as a final assignment.

Topics in Computational Fluid Dynamics

  • Introduction to CFD, examples.
  • Incompressible flows.
  • Numerical methods for potential and thermal flows
  • Numerical methods for viscous flows: steady Stokes equations
  • Discretization techniques for steady and unsteady Navier-Stokes equations.
  • Advanced optional topic (1): compressible flows.
  • Advanced optional topic (2): fluid and structure interaction.

Material will be provided during classes.
