Abstract:
A symmetric fusion category is realised as the representation theory of a group by classical work of Tannaka-Krein. This raises the question of whether and how to realise braided or modular tensor categories concretely as the representation theory of a conformal net of factors or a vertex operator algebra. I discuss some work with Terry Gannon on this reconstruction which involves ideas from K-theory and non commutative geometry to understand modular invariant partition functions as KK-elements.
